Kim Cottrell

Kiln formed glass
Kim Cottrell is an emerging glass artist, embracing kiln formed glass in early 2023.

He originally trained as a photographer, both in the commercial and domestic fields and he is using the art knowledge attained during his photography Diploma course to create vessels and sculptures that engage with the viewer and push the boundaries of glass fusing and kiln forming.

Kim is currently experimenting with different processes such as mokume gane, gelled glass, strip construction in a dammed mold form, reactive glass, kiln pressing, hard edge glass construction and partially fusing glass.

He finds great joy in making glass art and can lose himself in designing and assembling the glass to go in the kiln, and then the excitement when the firing is completed to see how the heat has transformed the glass.

Inspiration from artists such as Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet can be seen with some of the vessels and sculptures recently created.
